23 year old Lucy Muturi is from Wembley. She graduated from the MAMA Youth scheme December 2015 and since then has worked at Sky TV and is currently a trainee video editor at The Farm Group.
"Before MAMA Youth I was working as a runner at a post-production house. However, I was unable to work my way up as it was a small company. I wanted to be able to gain the skills needed as an editor in order to further my career, which I was unable to do at the post-house. I applied for MAMA Youth but unfortunately I didn’t get through the first interview stage. But this didn’t stop me. I asked for feedback on my interview and applied again! Before I had even got through to the first stage interview I had resigned from my job in order to seek work experience within the field of editing. This was a huge risk but one I was willing to take and I am happy I took it.
I got through the application process and through to the first stage interview. From taking on all the feedback given by MAMA Youth staff, I gave all that I could give. I was successful and made it onto the second stage interview. This was a tough one, but it made me fight for one of the ‘Trainee Editor’ roles. Success, I had done it!
Coming into MAMA Youth was an unforgettable experience and one I will remember for the rest of my life. My role at MAMA Youth was not just about learning the skills needed to become an editor but the skills to interact with people, to grow as a person and most of all to recognise my own potential. But needless to say the experience was not smooth running; it was challenging but that was the best part. It shows that in the workplace you are going to face so many challenges along the way but it teaches you how to tackle them head on.
After MAMA Youth I completed a six-week work placement at Sky, and there I had a mentor who saw potential in me and encouraged me to continue pushing for my goal to becoming an editor. Through MAMA Youth I connected with The Farm Group and after keeping in contact with them I was offered a job at their company and it is where I am currently working. I will forever be grateful for the journey I have embarked on and if I could I would do it all again!" - July 2016
