"Before I started MYP I’d finished six form college with no idea what the next step in my life would be, university was far too expensive and put me off. I knew I wanted to work in media I just didn’t know how to get my foot in the door. When I heard about the MAMA Youth Project and how it helps people like me get into the industry I decided to apply, thankfully they took a chance with me and let me do the training.
My experience there was amazing, the training was fantastic and gave me real sense of what working in this industry is like, I developed not only on a professional level but on a personal one too, my confidence changed so much throughout my time there, when I first started I was very timid but now I feel confident enough to smooth talk a room full of executives!
Throughout my experience I was given fantastic support from the whole team, someone was always there if I couldn’t get my head around something or I just had questions, they helped build my personality into what it is today. I feel like I left MYP a better person and I gained a new family - all of us trainees from series 7 still stay in touch and always let each other know when there are opportunities for work.
When I finished I was given a placement at Sky News, which was fantastic. Since the day I started everyone on the team knew I had a passion for current affairs and comedy, so for them to arrange a 6-week placement at one of the biggest news broadcasters was absolutely amazing and I can’t be more thankful.
I then went to work for Sky Skills Academy as a Team Leader which was so much fun, I learnt some new skills there and was delighted to be part of helping the kids figure out their potential future career.
Currently I’m doing a 6-month internship at Fremantlemedia. I’m so honoured to be apart of the company, it’s full of wonderful and friendly people and it makes some of my favourite shows, it has been incredible being able to help out on BGT and soon The Apprentice. During my interview I was asked about MYP as they saw it on my CV and they knew from MYP’s reputation that I had a good skill set, mind frame and attitude to work for them.
I’d recommend anyone who wanted to work in media to MYP as they’ve done so much for me, even though I’m finished I still feel apart of the MAMA Youth Project family and always try to stay in touch.
People who are just starting out with MYP are incredibly lucky, the advice I’d give is to soak up as much as you can, it’s rare to get the experience you get at MYP so take advantage of it all. Stay behind a few extra hours and learn things that you’re struggling with because it’s best to do it when you have time, instead of getting it wrong when it needs to be done immediately. Also remember that the people you’re training with will be your first network, be sure to grow with the other trainees". - May 2015
