Théoni Fernando

Digital Coordinator at ITV Studios

This month we're spotlighting the career of 2023 MYP graduate Théoni.

Fast forward to 2025 and 26 year old Théoni, is now a Digital Coordinator at ITV Studios, she shares her story with us here.

What were you doing before MAMA Youth Project and what was life like?
"I completed my master’s degree in Psychology but always had an interest in working in the media and broadcast industry. I was working at a few small companies handling their social media. Unfortunately, I was in a toxic work environment that drained my energy, so I left to rebuild my confidence and fully commit to pursuing my dream role."

What challenges had you faced in your life before joining the scheme?
"I come from a lower-income household and English is my third language, so I found it challenging to navigate certain situations at times."

Would you recommend the training to others and why?
"Most definitely! If you are driven, want to make a change in your life and pursue your goals of working in the media industry, I 100% recommend this training. It prepares you for the real working world. You get to meet like-minded individuals and professionals during the training."

How long did it take you to secure your first role in the industry?
"I was lucky to secure my first media role right after the training. I started off as a Digital Trainee for one year and was then promoted to a permanent role as a Digital Coordinator. I’ve now been at ITV for two years. My role is unique as I get to curate and edit digital content for platforms such as YouTube and Facebook. I’m also closely involved in planning and scheduling for FAST (Free ad-supported TV channels) and AVOD (Advertising video on demand)."

How important is it to be part of the alumni community and to have the ongoing support of MYP and its talent management?
"Being part of the alumni community and having ongoing support from MYP’s talent management can open doors to many opportunities within the media, film, and television industries. The talent management provides access to exclusive opportunities, networking events, and most importantly helps with job applications, offering access to roles available specifically for MYP alumni."

What advice would you give to young people who may be in a similar position to where you were?
"My biggest advice for young people looking to break into the industry is to say yes to opportunities, even if they don’t align with your long-term goals. It’s important to get your foot in the door first. While doing so, use the opportunity to network and build connections. Also, show that you’re passionate about working in the industry by being proactive - create your own content and start building a portfolio to showcase in
interviews for future employers."

What has been the personal impact of MAMA Youth on your career journey?
"It’s taught me a lot about myself, what my strengths and weaknesses are. It’s helped build my confidence, given me a better understanding of how the industry works. It’s also taught me time-management, as I had to juggle multiple workloads. The responsibility of driving a crew van has made me a more confident driver too."
